Cuban espresso is an espresso drink that originated in Cuba after the country was introduced to espresso machines. It’s also very popular in Florida. To make Cuban espresso you add sugar into the portafilter and then pull the shot. Some coffee shops refuse to make this drink as it may mess up their equipment, requires extra cleaning and slows them down. Starbucks does not offer this drink as most of them have upgraded to fancy automatic espresso machines where the barista only pushes a button.
If the only coffee shop around is a Starbucks and you’re really craving for a Cuban espresso this is what you can do. Just ask for a doppio with two packs of raw sugar. Hopefully your barista will add the sugar beforehand so the raw sugar can melt as the espresso pours into your cup.
I know it’s not the same as a real Cuban espresso but it’s the closest you can get. I also bet most of you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference anyways.
